Reasons to learn to play guitar
Kids today never cease to amaze me with how much they can play and how good they are through using courses like Jamorama. And of course learning this way is second nature to them. If you think you, or your child may want to learn to play guitar, there are plenty of good reasons to go through with it. It’s a worthy challenge and, if you get good, you have every right to feel proud of your accomplishment. It's also something that will be with you for ever and you will be able to recognise good and bad playing and sense a feeling of inspiration when you hear certain musicians and pieces of music - something only trained musicians can really appreciate. When you learn to play guitar, the first requirement of you will be that you do something that most people no longer do: actually listen to music. Most of the music released today is designed to be a fleeting money-making product or accoutrement to go along with a prepackaged lifestyle. Music can be so much more than either of those things. When you learn to perform it, you learn to hear it. Your ears become more developed, your mind is able to actually hear individual parts of music and, most importantly, you really learn to separate the bad from the good.
When you learn to play guitar, you also get a chance to experience music. Consider the difference between reading a book and watching a movie. When you read, your mind is busy and engaged and your imagination is constantly constructing an image to go along with the text. When you watch a movie, you’re a passive observer who is being fed the story. The same is true of music. When you play it, you also feel it, express it and bond with it. The experience becomes a holistic one, requiring you to use your body, mind and aesthetic sensibilities to perform something difficult - you become an artist.
For young people, the opportunity to learn to play guitar is something about which many of them are enthusiastic. This shouldn’t be wasted. Forcing a child who loves a guitar to learn the piano or violin instead is a mistake. Music is about passion and self-expression. You cannot change a child’s preferences in this regard to any good end. Fostering a passion for music in young people always requires that they’re allowed to explore their own interests. If they develop a love for the art, there will still be plenty of pianos and violins for them to play and, having already learned to play the guitar, they’ll pick those instruments up much quicker than they would otherwise.
If you’re an adult and you want to learn to play guitar, you should go ahead and do it. Knowing how to play an instrument is the mark of a cultured individual. It doesn’t matter if you play country, blues, classical, rock or punk. If you love the instrument, love the music and use it as a way to express yourself, you’re doing it right. Any instrument is challenging and don’t expect effects to save you from bad technique. You’ll have to study hard. As anyone knows, however, the most difficult things are the most rewarding things in life, and learning the guitar is a worthwhile challenge. Go for it, you'll never regret it!
